My Name Is Inigo Montoya

I know I promised to shoot off a post last Friday, but I didn't. I was in mourning. Kid C, who can not be held responsible for his actions, killed a large portion of my manuscript Thursday afternoon. It's gone. Disintegrated into nothingness with a few clicks of my mouse.

But I have back ups, right?

Wrong.

Why?

I'm stupid.

I've been feverishly working on a major rewrite, and in my addled state, I didn't back it up for several days. Several long, productive days. That sound you hear is me hitting myself in the forehead repeatedly. Oh, and crying. Gobs of crying.

There was also a fair amount of yelling. That is how I became Inigo Montoya. Except, I have way less chest and facial hair.

And, I'm a girl.

While my son's life wasn't in danger, he apparently thought it was. Maybe. After I calmed down, I asked him if he was ever going to touch mommy's computer again. He shook his head and pretended to slit his throat with his finger. Then, he pretended to slit his stuffed elephant's throat, too. Why? To show me what he thought would happen if he did touch my computer again.

Yup, send me the mother-of-the-year award right now. Just label it: Inigo Montoya--Super Mom.

I feel like I should slip into some leather pants and a frizzy wig and yell, "Hello! My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my manuscript. Prepare to die."

But seriously, Kid C and I made up. I gave baby elephant CPR, mouth-to-mouth, and a band aid. I gave kid C a big hug and some ice cream. He's steering clear of my computer, and I'm busy trying to reconstruct my pages. Sigh.

Now, all I have to do is find the six fingered man. Wink.

oh man, my heart is breaking for you right now! Lost words! But it will be okay... it will.

My own kid C probably wouldn't have made it out alive...

Blake, Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees, and I'm sorry, too. Sniff.

Brodi, I'm a little proud the kid is still breathing. :) And it will be okay...it will.

Beth, thanks. It does suck pretty hard. But the pages will come back, sort of. Maybe they will even be better. Crossing fingers.

OH THAT HURTS! There is nothing like the pain of losing all those beautiful words. Especially new ones. Especially because I WANTED TO READ THEM!!!!

Yes, you will write them again, and they will be better. It is all still there in your head. When I was in 8th grade I lost my only copy of an 80 page novella I'd written. I tearfully re-wrote it, and then when I found the original a year later I was surprised to see how many passages were nearly word-for-word.

I feel your pain! I've told you about the entire manuscript I lost. You'll carry a scar, but then you'll just go back at it and rewrite it even better -- and when you need to write about pain, boy, you've got the juice!

Rebecca, word for word? That's amamzing. Thanks for sharing my pain.

Jonene, this is nothing like losing an ENTIRE manuscript. But, your new version rocks.

Leisha, I am SO sorry!! But congratulations on still having a living, breathing offspring. :)

Jenilyn, living, breathing kids are a plus. ;)

NOOO! That is the worst thing ever! I'm so sorry. But you are awesome for making up with Kid C.

I hope you can get every word back. (hugs)

Carolyn, Kid C is too cute to not make up with, even if he axed my pages. Thanks for reading. :)

Poor kid C, I'm sure he feels terrible. That is worse than living in a construction zone for 5 months.

Oh my, this is absolutely my very favorite of your postings!! This is the winner. I loved it!

Hermana Maw said...

Matt, worse for whom? But, Kid C is his happy self. I don't think he even remembers it now. Lucky for me ... as long as I do backups.

Anita, schweet. If we have a winner, that must mean I can quit now. He he. Just kidding. What else would I do with my words? Thanks. :)

Totally been there...may your brain be blessed with perfect recall!

Last December I lost an entire revision. A months worth of hard hard work--I'd spent hours and hours every day on it. It was so devastating, I couldn't write for over a month. So, yeah. I feel your pain. But now I've revised it again and, yes, it is even better. --Though part of me is still wonders sometimes....

Hermana Maw said...

Megan, thanks. I'm happy with even partial recall. :)

Melinda, a whole revision. I might cry for you. I'm glad you came back and did it even better. :)

Worse for you, of course.

I LOVE Inigo Montoya. Thank goodness I did not kill his father.

I hate losing writing by accident. That's the worst! I tend to save things frequently, and then save them again on Dropbox. It won't prevent all disasters, but it helps!

Sadness. :( A suggestion for you...you should use Dropbox (dropbox.com). You download it to your computer and then put your manuscript files in the dropbox folder. Every time you save, it keeps it online for you. And if it gets deleted, there's a backup copy online. (And it's all private, so no one can access it either.) I use it and can sleep better knowing I have an automatic backup.

So, so sorry you lost your manuscript, but glad to see you retained your sense of humor. Loved the humor in this post!

Oh, before I forget ... thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting on The Allegory of the Chicken and the Pilates Class!"

As for backing things up ... have you every tried Carbonite? It's an automatic backup.

Hermana Maw said...

Matt, ;) thanks.

Lydia, Inigo is one of my favs. Thanks for the dropbox suggestion

Karen, thanks to you, too. I'm goint to check it out.

C L, thanks. I've been working hard and am back to where I was before. And yes, it's backed up in at least three places. Thanks for the suggestion on Carbonite. I'll check it out, too.
